With the increasing number of blogs and articles focused on skeptical parenting, it seemed time to create a skeptical parenting blog carnival.
Skeptical Parent Crossing, a blog carnival for free-thinking and rational parents, will be published monthly, beginning October 21, 2008.
This carnival is less about giving advice than it is about analyzing such advice. Less about making claims, more about evaluating them. As with skepticism in general, it is about learning how to think, not being told what to think.
The general guidelines for submitted articles are as follows:
- Articles should address issues relating to critical thinking and parenthood. Some examples include analyzing marketing claims, examining non-traditional medicine, secular/humanist parenting, or ways of developing critical thinking skills in both parents and children.
- Any claims made should be supported with empirical evidence, linking to sources when possible.
- Articles should be relatively recent, ideally since the previous Crossing.
- All submissions should be from active blogs, and should be actual articles, not just lists of links.
- Ultimately, what is included in each Crossing is decided by the host of that edition.
To submit an article, click here. Submissions are due 7 days before the next edition is scheduled to post. Submission deadlines are determined by the host each month, but generally are 24 hours before the next edition is scheduled to post.
If you would like to host an upcoming edition, please get in touch with me via email the Contact Form.

Woohoo! Count me in for posting and hosting.
Do you really think we have enough skeptical parenting bloggers to keep this thing running? That seems ambitious, but I bet we can pull it off every month.
I think the first couple editions will be fairly small. I’m hoping for 10 articles in each. And that might be a little ambitious, but I’ve started to notice a lot of talk about the subject on some skeptic sites.
Hopefully, it’s not just the skeptical parenting bloggers who will contribute, but some of the less parent focused, and more skep/secular/humanist generalists.
I’ll put your name on the list for hosting, and let you know as soon as I work out the schedule. Thanks!
Hello, count me in too - have considered contacting the new ‘Rational Moms’ group regarding their launch too?
I have contacted Jessie and Julie, and I hope they are live before the first edition. I’d love to have them post or host, too.
Good luck. I’ll definitely put something together. I’ll warn you though that it is difficult to keep up with a carnival. I’m speaking from experience. I had one that ran for a little over a year and was left frustrated with the whole process. And organizing skeptics is somewhat akin to herding cats.
Zoo-
Great! I look forward to reading your post. It’s always great to have the perspective of a medical professional.
So far, response has been great, but I know these things tend to lose steam over time. That’s why I’m hoping all of us will keep up the momentum.
I’m trying to think of something to contribute, but I’m looking forward to reading either way.
Really good idea.
By the way - I’m not ACTUALLY a parent… but have been trying for the past four years or so. Can I still contribute on issues that focus on raising children? Or questions of literacy or encouraging kids to be skeptical? I’d like to be clear if there are any problems regarding this….
Absolutely! No problem at all.
Count me in, too! I’ll definitely work on contributing and spreading the word about this carnival.
